I believe I may have excluded our Australian contingent, apologies for my fat fingers. I've removed a few IP ranges from the firewall block list. Hopefully access is restored.

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
I'm shouting for help..... HELP!!!!
Gimp has crashed and won't open any of my images from the hard disk. I can make it work on some other images but not my own.
I don't know what to do, can anyone help?

Uninstall and reinstall is usually a good option.

I have been very brave and used the terminal.... I purged GIMP and reloaded it but it was doing exactly the same thing so I purged it again and will have to have a rethink.....

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
Have you tried a different application to Gimp, maybe Irfanview or something similar, if you can get it for Linux?

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
I rebooted the computer, reloaded everything and then reinstalled what I believe is the latest version of Gimp. I haven't tried it, I am leaving it until I get the next Ubuntu update from Canonical in case it is something in the last update that is causing the problem. I shall report when there is something to say.
Just seen your post Ian and yes, thanks, that might be what I have to do.... I shall come back later.....

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
A quick Google shows
The latest stable GIMP 3.0 series (including updates through 3.0.8) is not "broken" in the sense of being unusable, but it is experiencing significant, typical growing pains, including crashes, performance issues, and broken legacy plugins. While it introduces major new features and stability improvements, many users are reporting bugs and regressions due to the major API overhaul.
Plugin Compatibility: GIMP 3.0 breaks almost all plugins from version 2.10 or earlier due to major API changes.
Stability & Bugs: Frequent crashes, UI glitches (invisible icons), and issues with tools like color-to-alpha have been reported.
Active Fixes: The GIMP team is actively releasing updates (3.0.4, 3.0.6, 3.0.8) that address these bugs, improve stability, and fix security vulnerabilities.
Performance: Some users have reported severe performance issues, although others report improved startup times for large font libraries.
If you rely on older, third-party plugins, it is recommended to stay on GIMP 2.10 for now. Otherwise, ensure you are running the absolute latest 3.0.x version (such as 3.0.8 or newer) to get the most recent bug fixes, say Reddit users and GIMP developers.

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
Thanks for researching that for me Kev. Yes, I have noticed glitches and breakdowns for a few week's now but this latest is almost totally disabling. I think I have reloaded with the very latest version and am waiting to see if it heals itself up..... I haven't tried using it yet this morning.....
Later..... I have used GIMP for a couple of posts including one of the areas that were triggering automatic rejection yesterday and it has performed perfectly and very fast. That reload might have caught the latest version.... I shall go forward with hope and a bit more confidence!
I don't fully understand it but the terminal is a very powerful tool, I am impressed! I need to learn more about it.
I've had a look and the version that loaded yesterday is 2;10:30 and not the latest. That's why it is working so well! I shall leave it alone.....

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
I'd not used Gimp recently but was using the gThumb editor every day. Then on Wednesday I opened gThumb and could view the thumbnail pics but every time I clicked on one it flashed up the full image but it immediately vanished and crashed the app. This was just after downloading that morning's regular software update. I tried the usual things such as reboot the PC, re-install etc but that didn't work. Then I found there were two versions of gThumb in the repository. I installed the latest one and it works fine.
As for Gimp, I thought there was a problem when I opened it but it was simply because the old version had been replaced with a new one and the usual bumf about `What's New' etc came up. Once I cleared that I could open images and it worked OK.
In Ubuntu the easiest way to install or uninstall software is to click on the App Centre icon in your desktop side bar and enter the name of the application in the search window at the top of the new window. Gimp is now on v.3.2 and that is what comes up on my PC (Ubuntu v.24.04) and Mrs Tiz's PC (Ubuntu v.22.04, same as your PC). So yours should offer v.3.2. The new version works fine on both our PCs. When the Gimp app shows up click on the Install button and it should install and open the application. While it's open click on its icon in the Desktop side bar and click `pin' to make the icon stay there.
I hope this helps!

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
v.3.2 was the problem Peter. Now I am back on 2:10:30 I am back online.... But I am a version behind you on the OS so that might be the difference.

Mrs Tiz is on the same latest versions of Ubuntu and Gimp as you are but it works OK on her PC. Probably best to leave what you've got for now then try again later.

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
Although Gimp is working fine for me I now find I've another problem with Gthumb. I mentioned a problem after a Gthumb update on Thursday when it was crashing each time I tried to open an image for editing but I re-installed and it seemed all was OK. Then yesterday I found a different problem...
When I create or edit images I give them filenames that sometimes include upper case letters. For example my collection of rock and mineral specimen images are given filenames in lower case but names of locations where they were found are included in the filenames and the first letter is in upper case. Also some specimens have names that are not scientific but are commercial, such as Ocean Jasper. I've been doing this in Gthumb for 15 years with no problem.
The images are given filenames and those names are also in my alphabetical catalogue lists. Therefore the order has been the same in both the images and the lists - until now! Since last week's update my Gthumb sorts filenames starting with an upper case letter in the way it sorts folders from files - by putting them first in the listings. However this change seems restricted to Gthumb; for example my Nautilus file manager is still insensitive to case. So at the moment my specimen lists in Gthumb and the file manager differ in order.
I could try going back to the earlier Gthumb version but that risks getting the problem again next it gets updated. I'll probably go for the nuclear option and change all my filenames to completely lower case. I know there are apps that will do it in bulk. And I'll use a belt and braces approach by doing it on copies of my lists rather than the originals!
I do wish techie types modifying software would keep in mind the people who are going to use it!
