If I Were In Charge

Post by Whyperion »

( A Place for shorter ideas than Politics or Speakers Corner )
I note requests to have British Citizenship are going to have to be accompanied by proof of English to A - Level Standard.

Perhaps it might more better to be (inc granting settled status) to have read , and understood, John Bunyan''s Pilgrims Progress, Milton's Paradise Lost (currently being serialised by Victoria Coren on Only Connect) and maybe the complete works of William Blake

Rachel Reeves still getting tied up in financial knots.

Not a full salve but I still think the removal of rates on housing and commerical premises was the biggest mistake. I would suggest in the first instance increasing the number of council tax bands , followed by the reversion to rateable values , poundage and a "fiddle factor" to move some revenue from richer areas to poorer ones. Reliefs of course for those on low incomes / single person households.

This moves to a more progressive and affordable form of hopefully funding at least local government

Youth Unemployment

Post by Whyperion »

We have been here before YTS and similar programmes in the past
Daily Express via MSN unemployed young people will be told to accept jobs or lose benefits
Thousands of unemployed young people are to be offered a "guaranteed" job and face benefit cuts if they refuse to accept it. Others will be told to take part in six weeks of work experience or training, under Government plans to end the scandal of almost a million young people with nothing to do. Official figures show 946,000 aged 16 to 24 are not in education, employment or training, known as NEETs.
A breakdown via NI Wales Scotland and England would be useful. Meanwhile a gap of over half a million makes the headline nearly 10 million while correct a bit sensationalised
As part of an £820 million package of measures, 55,000 young people in unemployment hotspots will be offered a "government-backed guaranteed job" in industries such as construction, health and social care or hospitality.

More than 1,000 young people are expected to start a job in the first six months, with the scheme initially running in Birmingham, Greater Manchester, Hertfordshire and Essex, the East Midlands region, parts of Scotland and south Wales

Well 55 000 is less than 5percent , but I suppose we have to start somewhere

Another 350,000 young people will receive six weeks of training, work experience, and a guaranteed job interview, designed to boost their confidence and improve their CVs.
The Department for Work and Pensions said there would be an "expectation" that young people will take up the opportunities they are offered,

This seems more ambitious and appears to have no timeframe for start or implementation
Conservatives have accused Labour of making the jobs crisis for young people worse, by increasing National Insurance contributions for employers, which pushes up the cost of employing staff, and introducing above-inflation increases in the minimum wage for people age 18 to 20, which employers have to pay - So its not young people fault they are unemployed and if this is a true structural issue then the 350 000 job offers surely are non existent ?
DWP The number of young people not in education, employment or training has risen by 195,000 in the last two years, driven mainly by increasing rates of sickness and disability. So its NOT due to NHI increases ?? and therefore if someone is sick or disabled they WONT be in the 350 000 job offers as such (as things like driving a mini bus is not exactly something that someone with many disabilities can do ?)
