Sorry lads, no, you haven't got it but not surprising, there won't be many left. I found them in the skip at Bancroft during the demolition and asked Jim Pollard what they were. He said they were merchant's labels for sticking on bundles of cloth being exported to India. So they are a trade mark for that particular merchant and quality of cloth. Heavily gummed on the back.

Iam sure that some time in the 70s a tea company used the same images on tab cards that came with the packs of tea...

That rings a bell Tom. Don't jump in straight away, let them have a guess.... I know you know what it is!

I don't know what it's called but I reckon it must be something to do with laddering a chimney.

Tom, we've educated these lads too well! You've got it Bodge, illegal now but in their time a useful bit of kit.

Tim's Terrace in Milnrow in 1986. Peter Tatham on the roof and Tom descending the ladder on the gable end which has the ladder brackets fitted ready for the planks and pointing another section of the gable. Only 26 years ago Tom....

26 yrs, feels like 6 months ago, haha,at one time every building contractor would have a set of ladder hangers, not just steeplejacks, the angle of the bracket can be altered to suit a leaning ladder, alot of the steeplejack hangers were just blacksmith bent 1" steel bar formed at a right angle as our ladders tend to be vertical.

That's who was using the one I snapped, a builder doing a pit of pointing. I grabbed the pic because I thought it was doubtful whether I would ever see one again.
Have a crack at this one. Sits there doing nothing for years but when you need it is indispensable.

Alternatively - pressing bearings in/out of their housings

.....possibly any or all of the above.
....but it's definitely a proper sort of "push-me ,pull-yer"...eh !
PS Still looks like a pipe fitters tool set to me , though.

Good lad Bradders! It's a Sykes Pickavant double lap brake pipe flaring tool. Ingenious design and makes perfect sealing joints for brake pipe. As I said above, you don't often need it but when you do it's the only way out. I doubt if I've used it more than about five times so even though I have had it for forty years I doubt if it's paid for itself yet!

Track-rod end puller (pusher really).....also very handy. (belting them with a hammer is to be discouraged )
PS Lost compression on a Rover V8 once, and correctly suspected a burnt valve..... (early days of un-leaded petrol , and was just seeing how long the old engine would cope)
The next Saturday Janet and I went to a church jumble sale in Melbourne, and the very first thing I saw was a large valve spring compressor , made by Pickavant .......best £2 spent in years.
Only used once in anger , but .......!

Good to tell who was poor and had to do their own maintenance! You're both right. I have another one somwhere like a heavy pair of scissors that pulles them apart...
Bugger, now I'll have to find another pic for you.....

I was going to put a pic up of my valve spring compressor but it has temporarily eluded me! I used it a lot of course and I don't see how anyone can do without one if they're dealing with cylinder heads. try this one, it might be a bit bigger than the ones you have seen before, used for bigger tackle....

piston ring clamp, but quite a big piston........

You're all getting too clever. Yup, it's a piston ring clamp for sqeezing the rings to the size of the bore before tapping the piston in with a rubber hammer. Saved a lot of trouble and yes, I was working on some fairly big engines....
