A plain and simple bit of music. First recorded byThe Carter Family on a 78rpm disc in 1928/ That's 98 years ago. I think I've been listening to it for about 65 of those years. Catchy but quite sad. . . . . .
I'll twine 'mid the ringlets
Of my raven black hair,
The lilies so pale
And the roses so fair,
The myrtle so bright
With an emerald hue,
And the pale aronatus
With eyes of bright blue.
I'll sing, and I'll dance,
My laugh shall be gay,
I'll cease this wild weeping
Drive sorrow away,
Tho' my heart is now breaking,
He never shall know,
That his name made me tremble
And my pale cheek to glow.
I'll think of him never
I'll be wildly gay,
I'll charm ev'ry heart
And the crowd I will sway,
I'll live yet to see him
Regret the dark hour
When he won, then neglected,
The frail wildwood flower.
He told me he loved me,
And promis'd to love,
Through ill and misfortune,
All others above,
Another has won him,
Ah! misery to tell;
He left me in silence
No word of farewell!
He taught me to love him,
He call'd me his flower
That blossom'd for him
All the brighter each hour;
But I woke from my dreaming,
My idol was clay;
My visions of love
Have all faded away.

Ah well I enjoyed it and I know a lot more about Mennonites and Anabaptists now. Why do Christains feel the need to kill anyone who has differences of opinion about religious doctrines. I think I'm well out of it.
Mennonites are a group of Anabaptist Christian communities that emerged from the 16th-century Reformation, named after their leader Menno Simons. They are known for their commitment to peace, nonviolence, and a literal interpretation of the Bible, emphasizing community, discipleship, and service. While they share core beliefs, different groups vary widely in their level of adherence to traditional practices, with some embracing modern technology and others maintaining a simpler, more traditional lifestyle.
I found this later kast night, and promptly busrt into tears. It's the most poignant thing I've ever seen and certainly struck a nerve. Most short items on Youtube now are AI generated, or staged by actors, and i would think this is too. Powerful image though.
Its not a song I was aware of , but have books of the "protest" era of the 1960s with Pete Seeger, Ewan McCall, Fred Dallas Joan Baez and similar.
We are coming to that time of carol singing. "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear", (Edward Sears .Unitarian in the US written 1849) , the last stanza of that talks of hushing war, ye men of strife ( which one in particular?) at least two tunes for this one and I normally get the wrong one .

Not into the song but love the headstone clip....
My experience of YouTube was slightly more prosaic but no less impotant. I knew most of the facts but still found it astonishing that such practices can be allowed.

We spotted this young lady, Bodhana Sivanandan from Harrow in London a while ago, and predicted great things. Well- she is fulfilling her promise at a rate of knots. Here she is - still only ten years old - totally destroyng a recent former womens' world chanpion Marya Musychuk. Don't they have great names? See her astonishing maturity in the interview. She's aiming to be the youngest grand master ever - and who's to say she won't be? The mark on her forehead is vibhuti (Hindu), and is said to energise the 'Ana chakra' . It seems to be doing a good job. You'll never guess what it's made of.

Now for something completely different. . . . The rhythm and Irish patter of the auctioneer are hypnotic.
I've been to these sales - at Tattersalls - Park Paddocks in Newmarket. Free to park, and you can just walk in and take a seat. Nice aftenoon out. They'll even supply you with a catalogue. This one was a bit special.

It's a different world David. I am no stranger to auction rings but not at that elevated level..... The auctioneer has to be a very special person!

This came to my attention recently. I recorded it as a clever piece of satire about three years ago. Many current interviews are not satire, but sound much the same. Sue Gray got her Life Peerage, but fell out of favour, and got the elbow. Remains a Baronness though for the rest of her life.

I watched the clip and am completely baffled. Summed up really by the end quote.... "Until the investigation is completed I won't know if I have been interviewed by Sue Gray" ..... That makes absolutely no sense to me so include me out.

starts with textiles discussion and wanders off into chemicals. (I assume the Perkins founded Perkins Dyers and Cleaners ?- or maybe not)
Doesnt mention Manilla though so far as I can see

I came across this today. I'm not sure about the history and the theology of it all, so I won't list it, but it's as canny a bit of music as I've heard for some time.

I saw that clip on Youtube David and enjoyed it. I don't know why but the phrase that entered my mind as I listened was 'Fantasia on a Theme' but this wasn't Tallis!

This is TV cook, Fanny Craddock from 1975. How to make a simple Christmas omelette with mincemeat.
Filmed in real time.

That brought back memories David! However, slightly disappointed because there was no sign of the long suffering Johnny!
(Were dresses really as boring as that?)

I would actually compare that more with scrambled eggs than an omelette. I always add the eggs to the other ingredients already in the pan such as, tomato, onion and bacon. That way everything is incorporated and cooked properly. Never mind, "still wet in the middle", that says to me that it is undercooked. Of course I could be a Philistine in this regard. Complaints on a postcard please.

Noted this week that the number of views of Youtube videos has overtaken those on the BBC channels. This will be no surprise to members here.
Various reputable Youtubers, including The Black Belt Barrister have said that the BBC are looking to close down BBC iPlayer, and put the content on to Youtube. Since some of tbis would be live - so it is said that a BBC TV licence would then be required to watch Youtube.
Good luck with that. . .

I can remember the iron railings being taken for the war effort in 1940 but never knew what the main reason behind it was until I saw this video which is well worth watching.....
