You're in the right area Gloria but that's not what it is. You've seen it before. The only clue I can think of is that it is totally obsolete now having been replaced by the milling machine.....

It's difficult Gloria because modern machinists will never have seen one. It's a tool holder that can be bolted onto the faceplate of a lathe. It cuts a flat surface on a workpiece fastened to the saddle of the lathe and a star wheel catches on a small detent fitted to the lathe and automatically traverses the tool.
This was a good way of getting a flat surface on a workpiece in the days before milling machines.....
