Cathy's image is her own, it was the bar code on the packaging that gave it away.
Your 'object' is available via an image lookup despite it being your own. I won't give away what it is.

Does the handle pump in and out to spin the disc shaped object?

Sorry Gloria but no.
Kev, I thought that it would be searchable because it has been used before.... Well done for hanging back.
It is an example of the popularity of science at one time for entertainment.

I'm with Wendy on that. I believe it's referred to as retained heat cooking, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall used one on one of his cookery programmes.

You got it right straight away Cathy. I am not going to be pernickety and press you for the exact use.... I used them for drying negatives after washing.

Is it a water pump of some kind?

I'm going to give it to you Mick, you are close enough. It's a pump that was made to be fitted in the oil reservoir that served one of the large bearings that supported the flyshaft in a team engine to recirculate the oil through the bearing. Driven by a rope round the shaft it served. Well done, this one is brand new, made by J&W Kirkham, Lark Street, Bolton.
Now we need another object!
