Try 'trivet' and it's for resting hot items on so that they don't damage the polish on the underlying surface. Usually made of metal.... (Mine is cast iron.)

Looks like one of those Home Guard ( not quite them it was another mil try out mob ) weapons for clearing beaches or similar fired by rockers. First seen on British TV i think with William Woollard "Secret War" as home defence thing. Having said that it is more large and seems to have some kind of defensive shelter on it
