It's the belt drive that operated the scrapers on the economiser tubes in the boiler house. It was an automatically reversing system and was fascinating to watch....
Now we need another object. Anyone up for it?

You're both getting closer, domestic but only a fraction more than an inch in diameter..... David is right, there's something on the side of it.

Look very carefully. The colour of the stains might give you a clue....

Well done Wendy, you have got it. It's the bowl of a falcon pipe. The bowls screwed in and the big advantage was that they could be dismantled and cleaned properly.... I reckon that's why I escaped unscathed after over 60 years of smoking!

Not surprising Gloria, very few people would recognise it. I'll knock it on the head at dinnertime. I'll try a clue, very closely associated with piston rods.....
