Re: POLITICS CORNER

Kings Speech etc. Nationalisation of British Steel - should have been done years ago with supply and tariff problems. Tourist Tax authorisation for urban mayors - we really do not need complexity and more (inflation increasing) taxes, hotels etc pay business rates as it is. Removal of Planning Permi...

Re: POLITICS CORNER

Baroness Harriet Harman was appointed as the UK Special Envoy for Women and Girls on 8 March 2025.

So far , to me , nothing noticable about things like womens rights and equality reported as improving in places like Afganistan or Iraq / Iran.

I saw that report but didn't realise it was in a populated part of the country.... THIS caught my eye.... 4 hours ago Mohammed Asasa had only just returned home after burying his 80-year-old father Hussein when several children ran into the house shouting, "the settlers are digging up the grav...

Sat AM and Starmer brings back Gordon Brown and Yvette Cooper ( she as some kind of thing for women -beyond my pay grade, If labour had cared about women then at least some kind of token WASPI compensation (5grand per person ?) could have been considered. Re: POLITICS CORNER

The Labour Party could try a bit of socialism. Fat chance with the media hype that would follow. Mind you it would need a Socialist PM to sell it properly. more democratic in its candidate selection ?- how did Starmers niece get on in Croydon ? Big what if regarding If Burnham had stood in Gorton (...

Re: POLITICS CORNER

A week in Politics may be a long time but next week sees the Kings Speech and a new session of Parliament, but a General Election is still ages away and a war in the Gulf rumbles away , I think US elections arrive first though and perhaps a change in the US or prospect of one will free up and libera...

Indeed while too few England seats to call completely we can make some observations 1) Slack BBC reporting in verbal sense on BBC TV , with misleading at least one Lab person when reading Lab 10 Ref 3 Con 1 then saying Lab lost control ( totals with extant implied Lab lead ) because she didnt add In...

Can you remember the days before the advent of social media when there was no way of venting hastily formed opinions? Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS

May Bank Holiday today. A fairly recent public holiday to the calendar. I note Labour Day on the 1st in Australia is fairly enforced by local authorties. Mum remembers for May Day getting New Shoes and New Dress every year (likewise her cousin). There was maypole dancing at school around a pole in t...

I wonder if the rise of some cancers in young people is due to excessive consumption of energy drinks and protein supplements (noting that it is happening in healthy people so it is not obesity alone).

My youngest received a penalty charge notice, for not paying the London ULEZ charge, through the post today. Re: POLITICS CORNER

I cannot agree with the DT that allowing in work / working age benefits to increase and also increasing taxation (a bit) is any reason for low(er) economic growth. Benefits - to those that need them - are not easy to claim and are barely enough to cover basic living needs ( that being in work also r...

Re: THE HOME LIFE OF OUR DEAR QUEEN

QEIIs 100th Birthday has started a flurry on TV of older documentaries and some newer updated ones and a bit of talking on daytime TV. Apparently there are a couple of biographies - one official in course of writing. That we still call elizabeth queen rather than late queen is interesting any refere...

London and the South East mini heatwave continues up to about 26deg C . not the highest April ever ( 29.4 in 1941 ) but enough to cause non aircon buses to be uncomfortable and a rapid rise in temps on the tube made travelling with any kind of numbers of passengers uncomfortable and one broke down d...

Anyone missing the passing of NCP. The founders sold it a few years back to overseas investors I hadnt realised they never owned most of the sites they operated from. Rents thus fell due on Wednesday and many were not paid with closures of sites occuring by Saturday. Some that make money are staying...

Re: Seen on Youtube

If you have the time - this is worth a look. I watched this, featuring David Davies MP last night - in a packed house ( just seven members out of six hundred and fifty) present. Cause for concern at least I'd say. Can there be a second retrial? I'd say it's the least that should happen. https://you...
